How do Pipe Clamps, Tube Clamps and Munson Rings (Pipe Hanger Brackets) work?

The Tube clamps and Munson Rings are used to hold a pipe/tube or round bar on to either a flat bar or bracket so that the pipe is restrained from moving or to hold some attachment to the pipe. It is tightened up by the one or two nuts that are on the ends of the Pipe Clamp, Tube Clamp or Munson Ring. The range that has a boss on one half of the clamp that is tapped to take a metric stud is normally employed as a hanger from the ceiling to hold the pipe up. It is normally accompanied with a flat flange that also has a corresponding boss so a threaded rod can be cut to the desired length. Fire sprinkler pipes are a good example that we all see.

Types / Styles : There are 2 types of Pipe Clamps and Tube Clamps and the Munson Ring range held by Anzor. All 3 types are broadly in two categories;

(a) Pipe Clamp; the Pipe Clamp and Pipe Clamp with Boss is formed so that it fits neatly over the outside of the stated pipe size. Note; Pipe is measured by its nominal bore size not it's outside diameter.

(b) Tube Clamp; the Tube Clamp and Tube Clamp with Boss is formed to fit neatly over the outside of the tube. Note; Tube is measured by its outside diameter and is normally of a thinner walled nature.

How do you identify Pipe and Tube Clamps?

All the clamps are identified by the pipe or tube size that it will pass over and tighten up on. The backing plates that fit the Munson rings are normally 10mm but for very large diameter tubes and pipes a 12mm boss is available.
